Poet. Water. Stone. was inspired by the story of Qu Yuan, an ancient Chinese poet who drowned himself to protest government corruption. Holding a large stone, he walked into the Miluo River. Today's Dragon Boat races are held in his honor.
Echo is my first dance film, made with director/editor Julia Atkinson, dancer Hyunsook Kim, and costume designer/makeup artist Misaki Takeuchi. It is a depiction of an echo splitting apart into two separate voices. The dance shows the phases as they fall further apart, struggling in their new discord, before finding resolution and harmony.
Full Circle has been an year-long collaboration with painter Lex Braes as we discover the elements that link visual art to choreography and explore the rituals of making art. We developed our language over many improvisational sessions, began working on a performance piece during a residency at the Marble House Project in Vermont and have most recently performed it at the Brooklyn art gallery, Showroom Gowanus.
Lucia was created through a collaboration with the writer Megan Mayhew Bergman (Birds of a Lesser Paradise, Almost Famous Women), who proposed a dance element for her story Expression Theory. It was about James Joyce's daughter Lucia, a talented dancer and choreographer who studied with the Duncans but who also suffered from schizophrenia. She was eventually committed to an asylum when she was in her late twenties. The drama of the story combined with Megan's evocative and spare prose-poetry gave me the inspiration for this solo.
